Anti-Extradition Protests | June 9th 2019
June 9th 2019: 1.03 million or nearly one in six members of Hong Kong's residents took to the streets in opposition to the proposed amendment legislation which would allow Hong Kong citizens to be extradited to mainland China. The proposed legislation represents yet another erosion of the basic rights and freedoms in Hong Kong that do not exist in the mainland, especially transparency and openness within the court system. Hong Kong was handed over to China from the British in 1997 with an agreement to remain autonomous until 2047, but China has taken steps to exert control over the region causing conflict, turmoil, and clashes with Hong Kongers.
